Applications under the point based system

See below for some of the visa application categories open to people from outside the United Kingdom under the point based system:

Investor, Business development and Talent visa

(This category consist of the following: Tier 1 Exceptional Talent visa, Tier 1 Investor Visa, Innovator visa and Start Up Visa)

Long term visa under Tier 2

(This category consist of the following: General work visa, Intra- company Transfer visa, Minister of Religion visa, Sportsperson visa)

Short term visa under Tier 5

(This category consist of the following: Charity Worker visa, Creative and Sporting visa, Government Authorised Exchange visa, International Agreement visa, Religious Worker visa, Seasonal Worker visa and Youth Mobility Scheme)

Investor, Business development and Talent visas

Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa

You can apply for a Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa if you work in a qualifying field and have been endorsed as:

  • a recognised leader (exceptional talent)
  • or an emerging leader (exceptional promise)
  • There are 2,000 places available under this visa category between 6 April to 5 April of the following year.
  • You must meet other eligibility requirements
  • You must apply to the organisation that is related to your qualifying field for endorsement, called a ‘designated competent body.’ The recognised field include the following: science, medicine, engineering, humanities, digital technology, arts/culture, fashion, architecture, film and television
  • You will be allowed to stay for up to 5yrs

Tier 1 Investor Visa

You can apply for a Tier 1 (Investor) visa if you want to invest £2,000,000 or more in the UK. You must meet the eligibility requirements

  • You must have at least £2,000,000 investment funds
  • be 18 or over to apply for this visa
  • be able to prove that the money belongs to either you or your husband, wife, unmarried or same-sex partner
  • have opened an account at a UK regulated bank to use for your funds

Your funds must be:

  • held in one or more regulated financial institutions
  • free to spend (‘disposable’) in the UK
  • Your money can be in the UK or overseas when you apply
  • You will be allowed to stay for up to 3 years and 4 months

 Innovator Visa

You can apply for an Innovator visa if:

  • you want to set up or run a business in the UK
  • you meet the other eligibility requirements
  • your business or business idea has been endorsed by an approved body
  • You must have at least £50,000 in investment funds if you want to set up a new business.

Eligibility

  • Before you apply you need to have your business or business idea assessed by an approved body. The endorsement body will provide you with an endorsement letter if your business is viable.
  • meet the English language requirement
  • be at least 18 years old
  • be able to prove that you have enough personal savings to support yourself while you’re in the UK- You need to have had at least £945 in your bank account for 90 consecutive days before you apply.
  • You will be allowed to stay for up to 3 years

Start-Up Visa

You can apply for a Start-up visa if:

  • you want to set up a business in the UK
  • you meet the other eligibility requirements
  • You must be endorsed by an authorised body that is either:

-a UK higher education institution

-a business organisation with a history of supporting UK entrepreneurs

You must be able to show that your business idea is:

  • a new idea – you cannot join or invest in a business that is already trading
  • innovative – you must have an original business idea which is different from anything else on the market
  • viable, with potential for growth
  • You need to have your business or business idea assessed by an approved that will provide you with an endorsement letter if your business is viable.

You must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • meet the English language requirement
  • be able to prove that you have enough personal savings to support yourself while you’re in the UK
  • You will be allowed to stay for up to 2 years


Visas that are no longer available

Tier 1 (Entrepreneur visa)

You can no longer apply for a Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) visa.

If you want to set up or run a business in the UK you might be able to apply for an Innovator visa or a Start-up visa.

If you already have a Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) visa

You can still apply:

 

Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur visa)

You can no longer apply for a new Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa.

If you want to set up a business in the UK you can apply for a Start-up visa instead.

If you already have a Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) visa

 

Tier 2 (Long term work visa)

 You will be allowed to stay in the UK for up to 3 years under the Tier 2 visas

Tier 2 General Visa

You can apply for a Tier 2 (General) visa if:

  • You have been offered a skilled job in the UK
  • You need to be employed by a licensed sponsorwho will assign you a certificate of sponsorship
  • show you are being paid an appropriate salary for your job
  • You will need to show that you meet the English Language requirement
  • You will need to show that you have the required level of personal savings as evidence that you can support yourself when you arrive in the UK
  • show you can travel and your travel history over the last 5 years
  • have tuberculosis test results if you’re from a listed country
  • provide a criminal record certificatefrom any country you’ve lived in for 12 months or more in the last 10 years, if you’ll be working with vulnerable people

Tier 2 (Intra-Company Transfer Visa)

You can apply for a Tier 2 (Intra-company Transfer) visa if:

  • Your overseas employer has offered you a role in a UK branch of the organisation
  • You meet other eligibility requirements
  • You’ve been issued with  a certificate of sponsorship by a licenced sponsor
  • You will need to show that you have the required level of personal savings as evidence that you can support yourself when you arrive in the UK
  • show you can travel and your travel history over the last 5 years
  • have tuberculosis test results if you’re from a listed country

You can apply for a Tier 2 (Minister of Religion) visa if:

  • you’ve been offered a job within a faith community (for example as a minister of religion, missionary, or member of a religious order) in the UK
  • You meet the other eligibility requirements
  • You need to be employed by a licensed sponsor, your sponsor will assign you a certificate of sponsorship
  • You will need to show that you meet the English Language requirement
  • You will need to show that you have the required level of personal savings as evidence that you can support yourself when you arrive in the UK
  • show you can travel and your travel history over the last 5 years
  • have tuberculosis test results if you’re from a listed country

You can apply for a Tier 2 (Sportsperson) visa if all of the following apply:

  • you’re an elite sportsperson or qualified coach, who’s recognised by your sport’s governing body as being at the highest level of your profession internationally
  • your sport’s governing bodyis endorsing your application
  • your employment will develop your sport in the UK at the highest level
  • you meet the other eligibility requirements
  • Your sponsor is the governing body endorsing your application. They’ll assign you a certificate of sponsorshipto prove they’re sponsoring you.
  • You will need to show that you meet the English Language requirement
  • You will need to show that you have the required level of personal savings as evidence that you can support yourself when you arrive in the UK
  • show you can travel and your travel history over the last 5 years
  • have tuberculosis test results if you’re from a listed country

 

Short Term Work Visa under Tier 5

Depending on the category you apply for, short term visas range from a period of 6 months, 12 months or 24 months stay in the UK.

  • Temporary Worker- Charity Worker visa (Tier 5)

 

  • You can apply under this category if you wish to take up unpaid voluntary work for a charity in the UK
  • You meet the eligibility requirements – that is: you have been issued with a certificate of sponsorship by a licenced sponsor and you have the required savings

 

  • Temporary Worker – Creative and Sporting visa (Tier 5)
    • You can apply under this category if you have been offered work in the UK as a sports person or a creative worker
    • For a sports person: you will need to make a significant contribution to your sport at the highest level
    • For a creative worker: you need to show that you will make a unique contribution to the UK labour market for example you are internationally renowned or are required for continuity
    • You have been issued with a certificate of sponsorship by a licenced sponsor
    • You meet the requirements for savings to prove you can support yourself in the UK.
    • You meet the other eligibility requirements

 

 

  • You can apply under this category if you are coming to the UK for the following: work experience, training, overseas government language programme, research or fellowship, or for an approved government authorised exchange scheme.
  • You meet the eligibility requirements – that is: you have been issued with a certificate of sponsorship by a licenced sponsor and you have the required savings

 

 

  • You can apply under this category if you have been contracted to do work covered by international law while in the UK such as: working for a foreign government or as a private servant in a diplomatic household
  • You meet the eligibility requirements – that is: you have been issued with a certificate of sponsorship by a licenced sponsor and you have the required savings

 

 

  • You can apply under this category if you are coming to carryout preaching work or work in a religious order
  • You meet the eligibility requirements – that is: you have been issued with a certificate of sponsorship by a licenced sponsor and you have the required savings

 

 

  • You can apply under this category if you have a sponsor
  • You meet the eligibility requirements – that is: you are over 18, you have been issued with a certificate of sponsorship by a licenced sponsor and you have the required savings

 

 

  • You can apply under this category if you want to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years (are aged 18 to 30)
  • Have £1,890 in savings
  • Have certain types of British Nationality or you are from any of the following countries; Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Republic of Korea or Taiwan
  • You meet other eligibility requirements
